The Netflix Greek mythology series Kaos just signed up a bunch of heavy-hitting stars, as reported by DeadlineThe Undoing‘s Hugh Grant plays Zeus with costars Janet McTeer (Ozark), Cliff Curtis (Avatar: The Way of Water), David Thewlis (Fargo), Killian Scott (Dublin Murders), Misia Butler (The School for Good and Evil), Leila Farzad (I Hate Suzie), Nabhaan Rizwan (Station Eleven), Rakie Ayola (The Pact), Aurora Perrineau (Truth or Dare), and Stanley Townsend (The Current War). Charlie Covell (The End of the F***ing World) is writing and executive producing the epic.

The series is being described as “a bold, darkly comic, contemporary take on Greek mythology” that will explore love, power, and life. It seems similar to The Boys, except with gods than superheroes. Hugh Grant as Zeus will be a deeply insecure portrayal of the all-powerful King of The Gods. The vengeful god wakes up one day to discover a wrinkle on his forehead, signaling to his neurotic brain that his end is coming, making him deeply paranoid as he sees red flags everywhere.

Meanwhile, the other gods are a mess too. Hugh Grant’s Zeus’ brother Hades (Thewlis), God of the Underworld, has his issues with an abundance of the dead who are waiting too long to be given passage. Zeus’ paranoia threatens the power that Hera (McTeer), Queen of the Gods, holds over Earth and him, forcing her to act to maintain her control. Then there is his son, Dionysus (Rizwan), on a chaotic, destructive path aimed toward his father. The people of Earth demand change, but Poseidon (Curtis), God of Sea, is more focused on his yacht and looking for parties.

A group of people from Earth, Riddy (Perrineau), Orpheus (Scott), Caneus (Butler), and Ari (Farzad), gather together to take down Hugh Grant’s Zeus and maybe other gods that get in the way.

Billie Piper (I Hate Suzie) is reported to have an unknown guest spot in the eight-episode series. The actors to take on the roles of Ayola and Townsend have not been disclosed.

Production company Sister will produce with Anthem. Georgi Banks-Davies (I Hate Suzie) will executive produce and serve as the main director of the series that stars Hugh Grant as Zeus. Runyararo Mapfumo (Sex Education) will direct too. Jane Featherstone, Chris Fry, and Nina Lederman will executive produce. Katie Carpenter, Harry Munday, and Michael Eagle-Hodgson will produce. Georgia Christou will write episode six.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be making KAOS, and I can’t think of a more exciting or dynamic team of people to bring everything to life. Georgi and Runyararo are both visionary directors with pleasingly dark senses of humour — I’m delighted to be working with them both,” said Covell. “I believe I’m still in shock at the news that Hugh Grant has agreed to play Zeus — this was my dream. He’s leading a stupendous cast of actors and we’re extremely honoured to have them all on board. I can’t wait for filming to begin.”
