Fortnite is introducing DC superhero Dreamer as its first transgender character to kick off this year's Rainbow Royale LGBTQ+ pride event.
Fortnite will debut transgender DC superhero Dreamer as a playable character in September as part of its Pride celebrations.
The addition marks the first time Fortnite has added a trans character to its roster and will spearhead the game's Rainbow Royale celebration of LGBTQ+ identities. The Rainbow Royale event will run through September and will also see some free LGBTQ-themed cosmetics added, including the drag queen-inspired death drop move, a new lobby music track called 'Say It Proudly' and a fresh, colorful loading screen. Dreamer/Nia Nal was introduced in 2018 as part of the Arrowverse and is a powerful superhero with precognition, dream walking and astral projection abilities.
The Fortnite Dreamer skin is based on trans advocate and actor Nicole Maines' depiction of the character in The CW's Supergirl series. Maines will stream herself playing as the character and interact with fans later in September to celebrate the launch. She also co-wrote Superman: Son of Kal-El #13 alongside series author Tom Taylor, with the issue marking Dreamer's first time entering the primary DC Comics Universe continuity. The comic saw Dreamer fight alongside Jonathan Kent, Clark Kent's son who decided to pick up his father's cape and guard Metropolis from whatever threats may be out there.
This isn't the first time Fortnite has used its broad platform to highlight important social issues. Last year's Rainbow Royale added colorful cosmetics and the songs of various LGBTQ artists to Fortnite's in-game radio stations. The popular battle royale game also hosted a Martin Luther King memorial event in August 2021, allowing players to watch the Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist's most famous speeches and learn more about the civil rights movement. The interactive experience received a mixed response, and developer Epic Games was criticized for not disabling Fortnite's whip-crack emote for the duration of the event.
The popular battle royale regularly sees new skins and emotes added as part of its seasonal cosmetic packs and has included various characters from across the spectrum of popular media. Most recently, Dragon Ball Z's Goku, Vegeta and Beerus appeared in the game, leading to many comical videos of the characters dancing going viral on social media. Fortnite has also hosted numerous in-game concerts from artists like Ariana Grade, Marshmello and Travis Scott. Recent reports have indicated that the next pop sensation to take to the Fortnite stage could be Lady Gaga with her Chromatica Ball, though both the star and Epic Games have not confirmed the news.
Fortnite is free to play on most home consoles and mobile devices.
