Before you post this on your angry gamer subreddit, hear me out. I think paid video game loot boxes are vile. They are predatory in nature, designed to exploit players and obscure the real cost of in-game items. I think every country in the world should outlaw them, and I’m glad Overwatch got rid of them. At the same time, Overwatch 2’s monetization is terrible. In the transition to free-to-play, we lost the ability to earn things for free. Though I’m mostly positive on the gameplay changes, it’s hard to ignore that Overwatch 2’s progression is worse in almost every way. I don't love admitting it, but Overwatch was better off with loot boxes.
I’ll start by comparing the two systems. There were two ways to earn cosmetics in Overwatch: opening loot boxes and spending Credits. You earned a loot box every level and could get three more each week for winning games in Arcade mode. During a seasonal event, you could typically earn five to ten more for free. Boxes contained four random items of varying rarity but would sometimes reward Credits equivalent to the price of a skin at that rarity. In other words, legendary Credits would be enough to buy a legendary skin. Credits could also be earned by completing matches. Receiving duplicate items also rewarded Credits, though just barely a pittance.
In Overwatch 2, both loot boxes and Credits are gone. Instead players will need to buy a new currency, Overwatch Coins, with real money. Coins can be used to buy the seasonal battle pass which includes about 80 items, or spend them directly on the items they want. A legendary skin costs 1900 Coins, or roughly $19. You can earn a total of 60 Coins every week by completing all of the weekly challenges. There are no Coin rewards on the battle pass, nor any other method for earning coins.
My Overwatch account is level 480, which means I earned nearly 500 loot boxes by playing the game. Factoring in the event boxes and arcade rewards and I likely opened close to 600 throughout my Overwatch career completely for free. That means I collected some combination of 2,400 cosmetic items and Credit bundles. There’s a lot of skins I’m still missing, but I’ve unlocked a significant amount of the available items in Overwatch.

If you’re a free-to-play Overwatch 2 player, you only get 20 items from the seasonal battle pass. Overwatch 2 seasons last nine weeks, so it would take you just over 20 years of consistently completing every battle pass to earn the same number of items I got from Overwatch’s loot boxes. If you’re willing to upgrade to the premium battle pass, which gives you all 80 items, you’ll catch up to me in a little over five years - and it will only cost you $500. I’m doing napkin math here. I haven't factored in the 60 Coins you can earn a week or whatever we might get for free from seasonal events, but you can see my point.
The benefit of a battle pass, compared to a loot box, is you get to see what you’re buying. You know exactly what you get for your $10 before you buy the premium tier - though, you still don’t get to choose what you’re buying. If there’s a specific skin, victory pose, or voiceline you’re after, your only option is to buy Coins with real money.
There are two at-risk groups that loot boxes exploit: gamblers and collectors. By axing loot boxes, Overwatch has removed its hook from the first group while simultaneously doubling down on the second one. If you had a desperate need to collect every single skin in the game, you would have been able to do it for much cheaper in the old system. Even if you only want one specific skin for your favorite character, you’ll either have to pay $20 or grind out those weekly challenges and save up. It will only take you 32 weeks to earn enough Coins for one legendary skin.
Blizzard actually removed loot boxes from Overwatch before it went offline. If you played in the last few weeks, you would have earned Credits just for playing games. Overwatch 2 could reward a similar drip feed of Coins alongside battle pass progress - or offer coins as battle pass rewards for that matter - but it doesn’t. You can’t even earn enough Coins in a season to pay for the next one since you can only earn 540 over nine weeks, and the premium battle pass costs 1,000.
Overwatch 2 isn’t the only game with expensive cosmetics (have you heard of Pokemon Unite?) but it might be the only one that’s ever taken previously earnable skins and charged $20 for them. Maybe if you compare Overwatch 2 to similar f2p games like Apex Legends and Fortnite you’ll see that it’s prices are right in line, but no one is comparing Overwatch 2 to Apex Legends, they’re comparing it to Overwatch. The justification for a sequel already felt weak, now it just seems like Overwatch 2 only exists so Blizzard can charge more for skins. It’s a dark day when I find myself nostalgic for loot boxes, but that is the free-to-play reality of Overwatch 2.
