ESTNN recaps the insanity that was the FNCS Grand Royale Finals.

Competitive Fortnite sent the beloved Trios format off with a bang following this weekend's FNCS Grand Royale Finals. Sporting a $5M USD prize pool—the world's best teams stretching across seven worldwide regions endured a labyrinth of pain, heartache and glory over the last two weekends en route to a twelve–match finale. Success would not come without adversity, as the Grand Royale Finals format featured two different scoring systems on days one and two.

The first six matches presented a standard Trio tournament scoring system—two points per elimination and 30 for a Victory Royale. Those points doubled on day two, which made the closing six matches critical. Each passing game meant more than the last, but only seven teams would earn the ultimate prize, calling themselves an FNCS Champion.

Today, ESTNN recaps the events that unfolded as the entire Fortnite fanbase prepares to turn the page to Chapter 3.

Europe

TaySon, Hen & Chapix Rally on Day Two

1ST PLACE GRAND ROYALE ($600,000) LETS GOOOOOOOOOO pic.twitter.com/fXoqGF1iuL

— GUILD Hen (@hentvv) November 21, 2021

As it should, the European FNCS Grand Royale came down to the final game as three-time winner TaySon and Season 5 Champs Hen and Chapix sat in the driver's seat. The three Craggy Cliffs residents were 49 points ahead of second after claiming a Victory Royale in game 11. However, the doubled points on day two meant they could not fall early in the last match. TaySon, Hen and Chapix did just enough to close out the competition, finishing 12th in game 12 with two eliminations.

With 579 points, the three talented Euros claimed victory despite a stacked leaderboard around them. Their final stat line included three Victory Royales and 66 eliminations. TaySon secured his record fourth FNCS Championship, while Hen and Chapix earned their second. It was a fitting send-off to competitive Fortnite in Chapter 2—a period which TaySon, Hen and Chapix dominated throughout in their own ways.

Season 8 Champs Secure Another Top Finish

2nd (450.000$) 😭 pic.twitter.com/mcV8AuqcxT

— Kami (@KamiFN1) November 21, 2021

FNCS Chapter 2 – Season 8 Champions Kami, Setty and teeq would not go quietly after proving themselves arguably the season's best trio. The format suited their methodical playstyle, and that reflected on the leaderboard. Kami, Setty and teeq matched TaySon's crew with three Victory Royales but fell short with 554 points. In any other tournament, Kami and the team would have won their second FNCS. Nonetheless, second place and $150K USD each is not a bad consolation prize.

Queasy, Anas & Th0masHD Slide Down Coming Home

3rd Grand Royale 270,000$ @anasfnbr @queasyfn 🥺 pic.twitter.com/EVg9FSgUC8

— Th0masHD (@Th0masHD) November 21, 2021

Many considered Queasy, Anas and Th0masHD the favorites coming in, considering their success throughout Season 8. The script seemed to fit these predictions—Queasy and company led on day one with 200 points but had the tall task of holding the lead with doubled points on the second day. The Catty Corner crew's first few matches were decent, finishing eighth, 18th and fourth, but other teams quickly passed them on the leaderboard.

Queasy, Anas and Th0masHD rounded out day two with a 14-elimination Victory Royale, but it was too late. TaySon and Kami respectively passed the day one leader, and they would ultimately settle for third place. They did not want the result, but $90K USD each should mend their wounds until Fortnite Chapter 3.

NA East

Bugha & Mero Achieve Back-To-Back FNCS Victories

1ST PLACE GRAND ROYALE FINALS ($285,000) @MeroFN @dukezfn

THE GREATEST TO EVER DO IT BRO LETS GOOOOO pic.twitter.com/4qkFsSbZYw

— Bugha (@bugha) November 21, 2021

The Fortnite World Cup Champion does it again. After winning FNCS Season 8 alongside teammates Mero and Muz, Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf made the unexpected decision to drop Muz. In his place, Bugha and Mero added FNCS Season 7 Champion Dukez for one last hurrah in the FNCS Grand Royale. Not many picked them to win, which sounds nonsensical considering how Bugha and Mero performed in the Season 8 Finals.

Bugha, Mero and Dukez finished day one 73 points short of leaders FS Zlem, TNG Tkay and TNG Chukky, but the day yet again created a comeback scenario. The NA East region's best came to play on day two. Six different teams, including Bugha's trio, collected Victory Royales, and it came down to the final match. Bugha, Mero and Dukez led the field with 38 eliminations coming home and reached a massive 524 points.

It was quite the performance out of two-thirds of the Season 8 Champions, and each player earned every cent of the $285K USD grand prize.

Jamper, Deyy & Tragix Rally Back on Day Two

2nd Place Grand Royale 🥈 ($210,000) @tragix_ @DeyyFN #LGLOYAL Just want to win 🙁 pic.twitter.com/er0NVSAfnV

— LG Jamper (@JamperFN) November 21, 2021

LG Jamper, Deyy and NOVA Tragix delivered on day one with eliminations but could not put a complete game together. That changed on day two; this trio started strong, with four straight top-six finishes and 30 total eliminations. Unfortunately, their last two moments ended tragically in 21st and 11th place, respectively. Those two games put Jamper, Deyy and Tragix behind the eight-ball with no path to rectify their mistakes.

They finished in second overall with 472 points despite failing to earn a single Victory Royale. Still, these three end Season 8 as one of the best trios without question, and $210K USD split into their bank accounts.

Slackes, Acorn & Jahq Finish Strong

3rd Place Grand Royale Finals🥉($126,000) @G2Jahq @Slackes_ pic.twitter.com/QrykIyZ1jG

— Acorn (@AcornFN) November 21, 2021

After some rough outings following their Season 5 win, LG Slackes, G2 Jahq and Acorn finished the season strong. Chapter 2 – Season 5 Champions hung around the top three throughout the FNCS Grand Royale but notably finished second on day one. The lead of Zlem, Tkay and Chukky ultimately slipped, allowing other teams to crawl into contention. The three players amassed 296 points on day two, adding to their day one total of 153.

Their two-day effort resulted in 58 eliminations and no Victory Royales. It was a solid end to the season for one of the best teams, and each collected $42K USD in Grand Royale winnings.

Four-Time Champs Earn Their Fifth with a New Teammate

1ST GRAND ROYALE @EpikWhale @Arkhram1x ($105,000) 🏆🏆LETS GOOO pic.twitter.com/QZUUvlzqgO

— Reet (@Reetlol) November 22, 2021

Four-time Trio Champions NRG EpikWhale and 100T Arkham made a tough decision to close out Chapter 2 – Season 8. The two moved on from their long-time teammate 100T Rehx in favor of controller superstar Reet. EpikWhale, Arkham and Reet meshed well instantly and quickly collected high tournament placements and wins.

Day one of the FNCS Grand Royale Finals left them in third-place—a winnable for a team capable of wiping opponents without breaking a sweat. The three NA West players rallied back on day two, and it came down to the final match. Day one leader Mizu poffiee, CYRZR and eclipse put forth an admirable effort through the tournament.

The arguable tournament MVP — CYRZR — churned out some impressive placements as a solo. However, EpikWhale, Arkham and Reet mounted an insane comeback. The three players managed 40 eliminations and one Victory Royale coming home. Game 12 concluded with their second win of the tournament. Reet claimed his second straight FNCS title, and EpikWhale and Arkham secured their fifth Trio triumph along with $105K USD.
