  • Fortnite & Kirby Might Be Epic Games' Next Crossover

Online clues point to popular Nintendo mascot Kirby being the next character in a recent wave of special guests to make an appearance in Fortnite.

Fortnite might be crossing over with Nintendo for their next big mash-up event, courtesy of the super-tough pink puff with a knack for devouring - and then mimicking - his enemies, Kirby. Epic’s massively popular online multiplayer game has seen its fair share of guest appearances in recent months, ranging from classic comic book characters to even real-life rappers such as Travis Scott, the headliner of its highly successful “Astronomical” event in April.

The Fortnite crossover festivities for this year began with infamous DC antihero Harley Quinn, who was made available as a player skin to promote the then-in-theaters Birds Of Prey back in February. Then came Marvel’s signature motormouthed mercenary Deadpool, who heralded a series of in-game bonus challenges throughout the months of March and April that culminated in unlockable skins of not only himself, but Cable, Psylocke, and Domino of the mutant crew X-Force. Now, it seems that Epic’s next special guest could be someone a bit smaller, rounder and pinker, yet no less beloved by children of the ’90s

A few days ago, the fan-made Kirby trivia Twitter page known as Kirby: Star Facts posted a screenshot from this weekend’s “Welcome to Party RoyaleFortnite event, in which the little pink puffball can be seen alongside DJ Dillon Francis briefly on the event’s on-screen video display. Not only that, but the post also points out that a recent My Nintendo wallpaper for the 3DS title Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn contains a Fortnite logo in the corner – both of which are being interpreted as a sign that Kirby might be headed to Epic’s hit Battle Royale shooter sometime in the near future.

In addition to his usual appearances alongside the rest of Nintendo’s roster of mascots in the Super Smash Bros series, Kirby has seen his fair share of starring roles in the past few years thanks to games like the 2018 Nintendo Switch title Kirby Star Allies and the aforementioned Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, itself a port of the 2010 Wii game Kirby’s Epic Yarn. He’s remained a popular icon among Nintendo fans since his Game Boy debut back in 1992, thanks in no small part to his cute appearance and trademark ability to take on the form and abilities of those he inhales. This has led to artwork of the little guy being commonplace online – even creepier drawings like those giving him the face of MCU arch-villain Thanos or imagining him with muscles.

Still, it would be quite odd for Kirby to appear in Fortnite, given how the series’ gun-based violence is a far cry from the cuddly platformer’s typically family-friendly fair. However, stranger things have happened in the world of Fortnite, and the idea of the game crossing over with Nintendo is an exciting prospect for shared fans of both. Only time will tell if this rumor is true, but players can pass the time waiting for Kirby’s possible arrival in Fortnite by checking out the “Welcome to Party Royale” in-game concert event whenever a repeat showing is made available for viewing.
