Usually, the Fortnite cosmetics that are the most sought-after are the various skins that Epic comes up with, or maybe at best, a glider. But since the introduction of pets last season, there’s been a new class of cosmetic to get fans to open their wallets. But the best pet so far, the one stealing the show, is free.
That would be Fortnite’s gingerbread pet, the Merry Munchkin, a new prize for one of the 14 days of Fortnite challenges. All you have to do to unlock him is to use boogie bombs or open presents in-game, and you’ll unlock the back bling pet for free. I believe you have to do all the previous challenges first, but none of these have proven to be terribly difficult so far. And this might end up being the best prize the entire event gives away, unless Epic has something else cooler than this planned on a future day. But I doubt it.
What’s so special about this gingerbread pet? Where to even start? Epic has gone all out and channeled the Gingerbread Man from Shrek, giving this pet more of a personality than even your own character has during a match. Here are all the behaviors I’ve managed to catalog so far:
- He will be scared and scream when you are diving out of the bus or redeploying
- He will get aggressive and angry when you’re in combat
- His eyes will follow enemies if they’re behind you
- He will dab when you get a kill
- He will laugh when you are reviving a downed teammate
- He will put up his dukes if you are downed and in need of reviving
- Sometimes he smokes a candy cane like a cigar
And those are just the ones I know about, as I’m waiting for more interactions to be discovered. While pets have been a fun addition to the game so far, I am deeply impressed with the amount of work that’s gone into this free one, and Merry Munchkin here has already become a community favorite. If this is the level of work that Epic is going to put into future cosmetics, I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with.
